PETER BLACK:
Come in

12-20 February, 2026

Does a “non artist” belong in art gallery? I think so. And Peter Black supplies ample proof as to why it might be an interesting idea.

Peter is the Nuclear Physics Lab Manager at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, and a very interesting maker who embraces creativity every day in his work creating the gear needed for various scientific experiments. He was invited into the gallery as part of Sites of Malpractice (SoM) - an ongoing, experimental project that tests what a gallery is allowed to be used for, and who it might serve.

Here, the gallery is treated not so much as a place of fixed cultural “meaning” but as a site of ontological ghosting. At different times, it might become a meeting place, a dumping ground, a transaction, a confessional, or something that would never be recognised as an art venue at all. (The question is not whether the uses are appropriate, but why they might register as inappropriate in the first place.)
