ARTIST STATEMENT:
Michael Skeen is interested in the cycle of ruin and regeneration. Seeking new possibilities, he uses segments of ephemeral large scale abstract murals recorded on canvas as a starting point for new work.
Capturing the tempo and energy of painting outdoor murals and engaging in a call and response dialogue with the studio, Skeen produces new works that hold the urgency and rhythm of working outdoors along with the calm and contemplation of studio practice.
Line and form collude with colour and composition whilst garden sprayers, household emulsion, and car paint are re-appropriated as tools of production, mirroring the use of disused liminal spaces where the bulk of the source material for the show was made.
Canvas is transported, cut and sewn together, occupying different spaces, holding fresh viewpoints, and embodying longer lifespans.
Following on from Skeen's debut solo show Space Debris last year at Grateful Gallery, Glasgow, Clean Slate is a collection of new paintings and combines that sit somewhere in between his expansive murals and his more intimate, smaller scale studio work.
